Action and Reaction

Creating a connection between action and reaction lies at the very heart of interaction design. We understand that turning the wheel of a car will make it turn, and flicking the light switch will turn the lights on. But with the rise of smart products, this mechanical connection is no longer given, and for at lot of smart products this has meant that the connection between action and reaction has become very translucent. In his talk, Jeppe will explain how to design smart products that are not just for the geeky few, but for the entire family.

Whether we like it or not, a designer is now a creator of digital systems, and this begs the question: Should design and engineering be two distinct fields? In this talk, Rune Madsen will present the main thesis from his upcoming book “Programming Design Systems”, and explain why it’s increasingly difficult to rely on static design tools, why designers must accept new tools to avoid irrelevancy, and what happens when we educate designers to use a programming language as their tool of choice.

Philips ties various health care solutions together in one design system that provides insights about people's health. Reinoud will discuss the challenges they face designing interfaces that span from professional healthcare solutions to consumer apps, and how they came to a Design system for the internet of things. He will also discuss the tools they have put in place to enable their partners to roll out these design standards. After all, it is in everybody's interest to design solutions which are easy-to-use and efficiently integrated.
